Your Treatment at a Glance

At Downing Dental in Solihull, a dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over the entire visible surface of a damaged or weakened tooth, restoring its shape, strength, and appearance. Crowns are used when a tooth is too compromised for a filling to provide adequate protection, or to complete a root canal-treated tooth.
Modern ceramic and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are designed to look and feel like natural teeth, and our team takes care with every shade selection, design, and fitting to achieve a result that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Each crown is individually fabricated by a skilled dental laboratory.

Benefits of Dental Crowns

Understanding Dental Crowns

Crowns are recommended when a tooth has extensive decay, is cracked, has undergone root canal treatment, or is severely worn. The tooth is prepared by removing a small amount of structure from all surfaces to create space for the crown. Impressions are taken and a temporary crown is placed while the permanent restoration is fabricated in the laboratory to fit precisely.
Crown materials include all-ceramic (zirconia or lithium disilicate), porcelain-fused-to-metal, and full metal — each offering different advantages depending on the location and aesthetic requirements. At the fitting appointment, the crown is checked for fit, bite, and shade before being permanently cemented in place. With proper care, a well-made crown can provide lasting function for a decade or considerably more.

Benefits of Dental Crowns

There are several advantages of Dental Crowns:

Full structural protection

A crown encases the entire tooth, distributing biting forces evenly and protecting weakened structure from further fracture, decay, or breakdown during normal use.
1

Restored function

A well-fitting crown restores the tooth’s original shape and bite contact, enabling comfortable, confident chewing and preventing strain on adjacent and opposing teeth.
2

Natural appearance

All-ceramic crowns are shade-matched and crafted to replicate the translucency and form of natural teeth, integrating beautifully with the surrounding dentition.
3

Long-lasting solution

A quality crown, well-fitted and appropriately maintained, provides reliable protection and function for many years, making it a sound long-term investment.
4

Protects root-treated teeth

Crowning a root-treated tooth dramatically reduces fracture risk, giving the tooth the best possible chance of remaining functional for many years.
5

Perfectly colour-matched

Laboratory-fabricated crowns are individually designed and colour-matched to complement adjacent teeth, creating a seamless, natural-looking restoration others will not notice.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Take a look at the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about this treatment below:

Crown treatment typically requires two appointments. The first involves tooth preparation and an impression; a temporary crown is placed. The final crown is fitted and cemented approximately two weeks later.
Tooth preparation is performed under local anaesthetic so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some sensitivity in the prepared tooth between appointments is normal and resolves after the crown is fitted.
With good oral hygiene and regular professional check-ups, dental crowns commonly last ten to fifteen years or longer. Material, location, bite forces, and individual home care all influence the exact lifespan.

Your Treatment Journey

Every patient’s experience is unique, but this is what you can expect when you start treatment with Downing Dental.

Consultation

We assess the tooth clinically and radiographically, confirm the need for a crown, discuss material options, and plan the preparation and design to meet your aesthetic and functional needs.

Treatment

The tooth is prepared under local anaesthetic, a precise impression taken, and a temporary crown placed; the final laboratory crown is then fitted and cemented at your second appointment.

Aftercare

We check your crown at regular appointments, monitor margins and bite, and advise on maintenance to ensure it remains in excellent condition for as long as possible.

I'm always very anxious at the dentist. I especially find the hygienist appts unpleasant, after a particularly traumatic experience at 76 Dental in Water Orton! The hygienist at Downing Dental was excellent and she did her best to be as gentle as possible. I also highly recommend Vanshika Patel
